South Bank Brisbane: A One-Day Guide & Where to Stay

Spend a Day in South Bank, Brisbane

South Bank sits on the southern bank of the Brisbane River, a short walk from the CBD. Parklands, galleries, a rainforest walk and a restaurant strip run along the water, close enough together to fill a full day without needing transport.

Begin the morning by the river

Start with breakfast at one of the precinct's cafés, then walk the riverside promenade. Subtropical gardens and public art line the path, with the city skyline visible across the water for most of the walk.

The Nepalese Pagoda and the rainforest walk are worth the detour before the precinct fills up. Both are quiet in the first hour or two of the day.

Explore the cultural precinct

South Bank holds three of Queensland's major cultural institutions within a few minutes' walk of each other: the Queensland Museum, the Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art, and the Queensland Performing Arts Centre.

Between the three, there's enough to fill an afternoon on its own. The program changes with the season, so a repeat visit rarely looks the same twice.

Dine along the river

By early evening, the restaurants and bars along the river fill up. Options run from casual lunch spots to full dining rooms, most with a view of the ferries and, once the sundrops, the city lights.

The Wheel of Brisbane runs later into the evening and gives a clear view over the city. Sunset is the best time to go.

Stay close to South Bank

South Bank connects to the CBD by pedestrian bridge, so there's no need to drive or book a ferry. From the Royal Albert, it's a walk, not a trip: down through the Queen Street Mall, across the Victoria Bridge and you're there in under fifteen minutes. Spend the day at South Bank, walk back for a shower and a change of clothes before dinner, and no one has to think about traffic or parking.

Our apartments come with full kitchens and in-apartment laundry, which is worth having on a trip built around long days out on foot.
