Once a year, the Brisbane Riverbecomes the best seat in the city. Riverfire returns on Saturday, 5 September2026, opening the Brisbane Festival with a fireworks display launched frombridges, barges and rooftops across the CBD.
The afternoon builds slowly. Live music, riverside dining and pop-up entertainment run through the CBD from early afternoon, well before the main event.
Military aircraft fly low over the river ahead of the fireworks. This is usually the first cue that the evening is turning. The display itself starts at 7pm and runs across multiple launch points, timed to the city’s own skyline rather than a single stage.
Good vantage points: South Bank’s Festival Village, the Goodwill and Story Bridge approaches, and any riverside path within walking distance of the CBD. Arrive early. The closer spots fill fast.
Riverfire isn’t a two-hour commitment. Queen Street Mall, the cultural precincts and the city’s riverside parks are all worth the afternoon on their own. Have lunch by the water, walk it off, and let the evening come to you.
Restaurants and bars along the waterfront stay busy from mid-afternoon. If you want a table with a view, book it before the day itself.
